Dolomites
Mountains Mountain range in northern Italy famed for jagged peaks
Northeastern Italy’s Dolomites offer limestone spires, via ferrata routes, alpine huts, year-round skiing and summer hiking along ridgelines protected as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, noted for their pale carbonate rock towers, dramatic cliffs and a highest peak, Marmolada, at about 3,343 metres; the range was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.
The Dolomites are the product of Mesozoic marine sedimentation and later uplift and erosion; they were also frontline mountains during World War I with historic military remains and high-alpine fortifications. Modern conservation recognises both geological significance and cultural landscape shaped by mountain farming and tourism.
Stretching across the regions of South Tyrol, Trentino and Veneto in northeastern Italy, the Dolomites lie east of the main Alpine crest and are accessible from cities such as Bolzano and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
- UNESCO designation: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique carbonate rock formations and geomorphology in 2009.
- Seasonal activities: Popular activities vary seasonally - summer hiking and via ferrata routes contrast with extensive winter skiing resorts and lift systems in many valleys.

Tips for Visiting Dolomites #
- Drive or take the Dolomiti Bus to smaller valleys (Val di Fassa, Val Gardena) to escape the busiest lifts and trails.
- Visit early in the morning at places like Tre Cime di Lavaredo to beat tour-bus crowds and catch spectacular alpenglow.
- If skiing, check lift pass regions closely - Dolomiti Superski covers a vast area with multiple resorts.
