Dodona

Dodona is an ancient oracle and sanctuary site in northwestern Greece near the modern village of Dodoni in the Epirus region. It is historically significant as one of the oldest known oracular centres in the Greek world.

The sanctuary was active from the late Bronze Age and reached prominence in the Archaic and Classical Greek periods as a centre for divination and cult activity dedicated to Zeus and associated deities. It continued to be used through the Hellenistic and Roman eras before decline in late antiquity.

Located in the Epirus region of northwestern Greece, the site lies inland on a hill southwest of the city of Ioannina in a rural landscape of hills and olive groves.

• Sanctuary age: One of the oldest Greek oracles, the site functioned as a religious centre from the late Bronze Age into the Roman period and was associated primarily with worship of Zeus.

What to See #

• Theatre: A large Hellenistic and Roman theatre carved into the hillside that served the sanctuary and remains one of the most substantial ruins on site.
• Temple complex: Ruins of temples and altars dedicated to Zeus and other deities, together with remains of sacred precinct structures and votive areas.
