National Park Island national park protecting coastal habitats and marine life
A national park on Dirk Hartog Island in Western Australia, known for historic landing sites, rugged beaches, fishing, 4WD tracks and abundant marine and bird life for snorkellers and anglers.
Dirk Hartog Island National Park is a protected area occupying Dirk Hartog Island off the coast of Western Australia in the Shark Bay region. The island is closely associated with the 1616 landing of Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog.
The park protects long sandy beaches, coastal dunes and shore habitats used by seabirds and other native wildlife. The island is visited for historic sites, coastal walks and wildlife observation within the broader Shark Bay natural landscape.
The island was named after the Dutch mariner Dirk Hartog, who landed in 1616 and left a pewter plate recording the visit; a later expedition led by Willem de Vlamingh replaced that plate in 1697. Interpretive signs at Cape Inscription recount these events.
The island sits off the Gascoyne coast within the Shark Bay region. Access is remote and typically arranged from the Shark Bay area, with the town of Denham on the mainland serving as the main nearby service centre.
- Historic Dirk Hartog plate: a replica and interpretive markers at Cape Inscription commemorate the 1616 landing; the original Dirk Hartog pewter plate is held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
- Shark Bay World Heritage: lies within the Shark Bay World Heritage area, recognised for its coastal and marine values.
