Dirk Hartog Island
Island Western Australian island site of early Dutch landing
Remote island off Western Australia’s coast known for a 17th‑century Dutch landing, long beaches and offshore fishing; visitors come for 4WD camping, shore and reef fishing, shipwreck history and encounters with seabirds and wallabies.
Dirk Hartog Island is an offshore island in Western Australia’s Shark Bay region, named after the Dutch captain Dirk Hartog who made landfall there in 1616. It is best known for the historic inscribed plate associated with that first recorded European landing on the west Australian coast.
The island contains coastal dunes, beaches and inland shrubland and has a long pastoral history as well as recent conservation programs to restore native vegetation and wildlife. Access is by boat or authorised air/sea transfer and activities include wildlife observation and guided conservation visits.
The island was used as a pastoral lease for many decades and retains historic sites linked to early European activity. It remains an important conservation area within the broader Shark Bay World Heritage region.
The island lies off the mid-west coast of Western Australia within Shark Bay, administered from the state of Western Australia. It is remote from major urban centres and reached by boat from the mainland or by authorised transport services.
- Historic landing: Named for the Dutch explorer who first landed there in 1616, a pewter plate inscribed by Dirk Hartog marks the island's place in European maritime history.
- Conservation and pastoral history: Part of the Shark Bay region of Western Australia, the island has been used for pastoralism in the past and is now a focus for conservation and ecological restoration.
