Diamantina National Park
Park Queensland outback park with gorges and rivers
Remote outback park in western Queensland where braided river channels, claypans and gorges create seasonal wetlands; visitors come for 4WD routes, birdwatching, camping and wide-open outback scenery.
Diamantina National Park is a remote protected area in western Queensland, Australia, that conserves arid and semi-arid landscapes associated with the Diamantina River system. The park contains gibber plains, spinifex grassland and channels that respond dramatically to episodic flooding.
The park’s character is defined by wide, sparsely vegetated plains, channel systems that fill after seasonal rains and habitats that support large numbers of waterbirds and other wildlife following flood events. There are no extensive visitor facilities; access is typically by four-wheel-drive tracks and longer outback routes.
The landscapes have long been used for pastoralism and Indigenous land uses; more recently they have been placed under conservation management to protect ecological values associated with the Diamantina catchment and its episodic wetland habitats.
The park lies in central western Queensland within the broader Diamantina Shire, in a remote inland region several hours’ drive from the nearest larger towns and services.
