Devín Castle

Devín Castle is a hilltop medieval castle ruin in the Bratislava region of Slovakia, overlooking the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The site has fortified remains that dominate a steep limestone promontory and is one of the country’s best-known historic ruins.

Visitors can walk among the upper and lower castle ruins, see medieval walls and towers and use the site’s terraces for panoramic views over the river confluence and nearby plains. The location is a popular short excursion from Bratislava.

The site has been fortified since ancient times, with a known medieval castle constructed during the high Middle Ages; it functioned as a border stronghold and administrative centre before being dismantled in the early 19th century after military action.

Devín Castle is located in the Devín borough, about 10 kilometres northwest of central Bratislava and close to the Austrian border.

• Confluence viewpoint: The castle stands at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers and offers a panoramic viewpoint over the meeting of the two waterways and the surrounding floodplain.

• Upper castle: The upper castle ruins include the main keep, barbican remains and a reconstructed tower providing views across the rivers.
