Archaeological Site Ancient Hellenistic port city ruins near Volos

Demetrias is an ancient Hellenistic city on the Pagasetic Gulf in Thessaly, Greece, founded in 294 BC by Demetrius I Poliorcetes. It became an important regional port and administrative centre in the Hellenistic period.
Ruins include extensive fortified walls, the remains of the citadel and sections of the ancient harbour; visible masonry and street traces give a sense of the city’s layout and scale. Many objects recovered from excavations are on display in the regional archaeological museum in Volos.
The city was thrown up as a purpose-built Hellenistic foundation and functioned as a major naval and commercial centre; it continued to be occupied into Roman and Byzantine times and served as a diocesan seat in the later periods. Over time the urban fabric was reused and altered, and the site fell into decline in the medieval era.
The site sits on the coast of the Pagasetic Gulf in the Magnesia regional unit of Thessaly, near the modern city of Volos and its coastal plain.
