De Hoge Veluwe National Park
Park Extensive national park with diverse landscapes and museum
De Hoge Veluwe merges heathland, pine forest and drifting sands with extensive cycling routes and the Kröller-Müller Museum, noted for its Van Gogh holdings and outdoor sculpture park.
De Hoge Veluwe National Park is a large nature reserve in Gelderland, the Netherlands, established as a protected landscape in 1935. It combines heathland, sand drifts and mixed forest across roughly 5,400 hectares (about 54 km²).
The park is known for extensive cycling and walking networks and a mix of natural and cultural attractions. The on-site Kröller-Müller Museum presents a significant modern art and sculpture collection in a dedicated building, and open-air sculptures are dotted across the landscape. Visitors also use marked trails and roads to reach dunes, heath areas and viewpoints; many explore the park by the provided white rental bicycles.
The land was assembled and preserved in the early 20th century by Helene and Anton Kröller-Müller who created the museum and estate; it became a national park with continued conservation and visitor development through the 20th century. Several historic buildings on the property date to the Kröller-Müller period and to earlier estate uses.
The park sits on the central Veluwe plateau in the province of Gelderland, between Arnhem and Apeldoorn, with multiple official entrances and a visitor centre near Otterlo. The surrounding landscape is a mix of agricultural land and contiguous woodland of the Veluwe region.
- Cycling access: Hundreds of free white bicycles are available at several access points for use inside the park, making cycling the main method to get around.
- Best time to visit: Best visited from late spring to early autumn when trails and visitor facilities are fully open and wildflower and insect activity peaks.
What to See #
- Kröller-Müller Museum: Home to a major modern art collection assembled by Helene Kröller-Müller, with substantial works by Vincent van Gogh and twentieth-century sculptural pieces housed in a museum building within the park.
- Jachthuis Sint Hubertus: A hunting lodge designed by architect H.P. Berlage completed in the early 20th century, notable for its brick architecture and landscaped grounds adjacent to the park's sand drifts and forest.
