Daphni Monastery

The Monastery of Daphni is a Byzantine monastery complex on the western outskirts of Athens in Attica, notable for its well-preserved 11th-century mosaics. It is part of Greece’s ensemble of important middle-Byzantine religious monuments.

The interior contains extensive mosaics covering the dome and sanctuary, with surviving figurative and decorative panels that are among the finest examples of 11th-century Byzantine mosaic art. The church follows a cross-in-square plan and has a compact, single-domed katholikon that concentrates the mosaic program in a small interior volume.

The present church was rebuilt in the middle Byzantine period, with the surviving mosaics executed in the 11th century. The site preserved medieval fabric and underwent restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries to conserve the mosaic decoration.

Daphni sits on the slope of the Aigaleo hills near the suburb of Chaidari, west of central Athens, close to the historic road out of the city toward the Corinthian Gulf.
