Danggu Gorge National Park
Park Remote Western Australian park famed for river gorges
Carved by the Fitzroy River, Danggu Gorge offers sheltered walls of Devonian sandstone and guided boat tours; visitors come for river cruises, freshwater wildlife and Aboriginal cultural connections.
Danggu Gorge National Park (formerly Geikie Gorge) is a protected gorge in the Kimberley region of Western Australia carved by the Fitzroy River and noted for its layered limestone walls.
The central attraction is the narrow river gorge with vertical limestone cliffs towering above the water; guided boat tours and short walks allow close viewing of the geology and freshwater wildlife. The site is important both geologically and ecologically and is a common day-visit from nearby towns.
The gorge formed as the Fitzroy River incised into ancient reef and sedimentary rock sequences; European naming and tourism developed in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the site now carries the locally used name Danggu.
The park is located near the town of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley, surrounded by savanna and riverine landscapes.
- Best time to visit: The best time for boat cruises and comfortable wildlife viewing is the dry season, typically May to September, when river conditions are most reliable.
