Dam Square is the central public square of Amsterdam, established at the site of the original dam on the River Amstel and functioning as the city’s historic and ceremonial centre. It is surrounded by major civic buildings and is a focal point for public events.
Key features around the square include the 17th-century building now serving as the Royal Palace, the 20th-century National Monument, and the Nieuwe Kerk. The square is also flanked by shops, cafés and major pedestrian routes to Amsterdam Centraal station.
Historically the square developed from the 13th-century dam and expanded during Amsterdam’s Golden Age in the 17th century, when the city hall now the Royal Palace was constructed. The National Monument on the square was unveiled in the 1950s as a wartime memorial.
Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the square is immediately accessible from the central train station and serves as a hub for city trams, walking tours and public gatherings.

How to Get to Dam Square #
Dam Square is in the heart of Amsterdam directly opposite the Royal Palace. The square is a 5-10 minute walk south from Amsterdam Centraal station along Damrak/Rokin, and is served by multiple city trams and buses that stop in the central area; follow signs for “Dam” when you leave Centraal.
Driving in the immediate city center is restricted-use central parking or a P+R outside the center and continue by tram, bus or on foot. From most parts of central Amsterdam it is an easy walk of under 20 minutes.

- Go to Dam Square at first light for unobstructed photos of the Royal Palace and National Monument before tour groups and street performers arrive; the square fills quickly from mid-morning on.
