Dam Square is the central public square of Amsterdam, established at the site of the original dam on the River Amstel and functioning as the city’s historic and ceremonial centre. It is surrounded by major civic buildings and is a focal point for public events.

Key features around the square include the 17th-century building now serving as the Royal Palace, the 20th-century National Monument, and the Nieuwe Kerk. The square is also flanked by shops, cafés and major pedestrian routes to Amsterdam Centraal station.

Historically the square developed from the 13th-century dam and expanded during Amsterdam’s Golden Age in the 17th century, when the city hall now the Royal Palace was constructed. The National Monument on the square was unveiled in the 1950s as a wartime memorial.

Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the square is immediately accessible from the central train station and serves as a hub for city trams, walking tours and public gatherings.
