Dachstein Mountains
Mountains Austrian mountain massif with Alpine caves and peaks
Part of the Northern Limestone Alps, the Dachstein range offers glacier skiing, the Dachstein Ice Caves, via ferrata routes and alpine hiking with views over Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut lake district.
Dachstein Mountains are a limestone massif in the Northern Limestone Alps of Austria, centered near Hallstatt and Obertraun. The range includes the Hoher Dachstein peak at 2,995 metres and is part of a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape since 1997.
The massif offers high-alpine features and accessible visitor attractions: glaciers and a glacier plateau, show caves with ice formations, and cliff-top viewing areas on the Krippenstein ridge. Cable cars connect valley towns to the plateau and there are marked hiking routes and via ferrata up to exposed ridgelines.
The Dachstein Group is composed mainly of Dachstein limestone deposited in the Late Triassic and subsequently uplifted and sculpted by mountain-building and glacial erosion over millions of years. Human use has ranged from alpine pasture and salt-transport routes to modern tourism infrastructure built in the 20th century.
Geographically the Dachstein sits on the borders of Upper Austria, Styria and the Salzkammergut region, near the village of Obertraun and the town of Hallstatt. It lies in central Austria, roughly southeast of the city of Salzburg, and is reached by regional roads and cable-car links from surrounding valleys.
- Highest peak: Reaches 2,995 metres at its highest point, making the Hoher Dachstein one of the tallest peaks in the Northern Limestone Alps.
- UNESCO listing: Included in the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape listed by UNESCO in 1997 for its combined natural and cultural values.
- Visitor access: Multiple visitor cable cars serve the massif from towns such as Ramsau and Obertraun and provide access to glacier plateaus, caves and hiking routes.
What to See #
- Hoher Dachstein: The highest summit of the group, reaching 2,995 metres, and the main objective for mountaineers and ski tours.
