Cynosarges

Cynosarges was an ancient sanctuary and gymnasium on the outskirts of classical Athens dedicated to Heracles. It occupied a recognisable place in Athenian civic and religious life in the classical period.

The site is of interest for its archaeological remains and for its role in Athenian social and educational practice; surviving traces correspond to foundations and layout typical of a gymnasium and shrine. Modern visitors generally view the location in the context of wider archaeological tours of Athens rather than as a large standalone ruin.

In antiquity the sanctuary was dedicated to the cult of Heracles and included a gymnasium and precinct used for training and rites; regulations permitted certain residents such as illegitimate youths to use its facilities. The place is also cited in sources as linked with teachers like Antisthenes and the early development of the Cynic philosophical tradition.

It stood just outside the classical city limits of Athens near the Ilissos valley, in the area now inside the southern parts of modern Athens.
