Curia of Pompey
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman senate building where Caesar was assassinated
Located within the Theatre of Pompey in Rome, the Curia Pompeia marks the spot associated with Julius Caesar’s assassination; visitors come for Roman ruins, archaeological context and guided walks through Largo di Torre Argentina.
The Curia of Pompey was a Roman meeting hall built as part of the Theatre of Pompey in Rome. Constructed in the late first century BCE by Pompey the Great, it is historically significant as the site of Julius Caesar’s assassination in 44 BCE.
Remains of the curia survive among the excavated structures at Largo di Torre Argentina, an archaeological complex that exposes several Republican-era temples and civic buildings. The curia’s footprint and masonry can be seen at street level within the square and are interpreted on-site.
The curia was erected as a meeting space for the Senate within the porticoed precinct of Pompey’s theatre, built in the mid-1st century BCE. On 15 March 44 BCE, Caesar was attacked and killed inside the curia by a group of senators; the building later fell out of official use and its remains were buried and then discovered by archaeologists.
The site lies in central Rome at Largo di Torre Argentina in the historic Campus Martius area, within easy walking distance of other central monuments and piazzas.

- Access and viewing are tied to the Largo di Torre Argentina archaeological site-check that site's opening hours or guided-visit times before going, since the Curia itself is not a standalone museum and access can be limited.
- Don't rush past the surface-level ruins: spend a few minutes with a guide or the onsite information panels to understand the Curia's relationship to the Theater of Pompey and why the location matters to Rome's late Republic history.
