Main image

Cumbemayo is an archaeological and natural site near Cajamarca in northern Peru, noted for a carved stone aqueduct and distinctive vertical rock formations known as Los Frailones. The complex combines engineered waterworks and sculpted natural features created before the rise of the Inca state.

The site’s main attractions are the rock-cut aqueduct channel and the nearby cluster of tall, columnar stone formations that stand above the surrounding ground. Paths and short trails link the features and allow close viewing of the carved channel and the weathered stone pillars.

Archaeological study dates the engineering works and associated features to the pre-Inca period, and researchers interpret the aqueduct as a significant example of early Andean hydraulic engineering. The site has long been recognized as an important cultural landscape in the Cajamarca region.

Cumbemayo sits in the highlands near the city of Cajamarca in northern Peru, on a volcanic plateau with a semi-arid highland environment.

  • Pre-Inca chronology: The structures are pre-Inca in date and are commonly assigned to activities in the first millennium BCE on stylistic and engineering grounds.

What to See #

  • Aqueduct: The rock-cut aqueduct is a carved channel cut into volcanic rock that diverts water across a slope and is the site's most studied engineering feature.
  • Los Frailones: Los Frailones are vertical sculpted stone formations carved by erosion and later modified or curated in the pre-Inca period; they form a visually distinct cluster near the aqueduct area.
