Culgoa Floodplain National Park Park
Vast floodplain national park with riverine woodlands
Protecting the Culgoa River floodplain, this park preserves red-gum woodlands, braided channels and seasonal wetlands; visitors come for remote birdwatching, camping and the open outback river landscape.
Culgoa Floodplain National Park protects a section of the Culgoa River floodplain in far south-western Queensland, preserving river channels, riverine woodlands and ephemeral wetlands. The landscape is dominated by floodplain ecology with species adapted to episodic inundation and drying.
The park becomes especially important for colonial waterbird breeding and aquatic life following major flood events, when extensive wetlands form and attract large numbers of birds. Vegetation communities include river red gum and coolibah woodlands on the floodplain.
The park lies in a remote part of Queensland near the New South Wales border within the Murray-Darling Basin; access is by unsealed roads and visitors should plan for long distances and limited facilities.
- Flood-driven ecology: The park's ecological value is strongly tied to episodic flooding - many bird and fish breeding events occur after flood pulses, so wildlife viewing is best following regional flood seasons.
