Cueva de La Pasiega

Cueva de La Pasiega is a Paleolithic cave in Cantabria, northern Spain, noted for its parietal art and archaeological deposits. It is one of the caves in the Monte Castillo complex near Puente Viesgo and forms part of the region’s concentration of prehistoric rock art.

The cave contains numerous paintings and engravings in red and black pigments, with panels of schematic animals, signs and abstract motifs produced during the Upper Paleolithic. The artworks represent a substantial assemblage of prehistoric motifs and have been the subject of archaeological and scientific study.

The decorated galleries were created during the Upper Paleolithic and have been examined by archaeologists since the 20th century; they are part of research into prehistoric art and human activity in the Cantabrian region. Conservation efforts have focused on preventing damage from humidity and human access.

La Pasiega lies in the Monte Castillo area near the town of Puente Viesgo in Cantabria, within a landscape of limestone karst and river valleys on Spain’s north coast. The cave is reached from local roads and is part of a cluster of heritage sites in the valley.
