North of Madrid, the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares protects the upper Manzanares river, La Pedriza’s granite crags and Manzanares el Real castle; people hike, climb and watch raptors over Castilian landscapes.
Cuenca Alta del Manzanares is a protected regional park that covers the upper watershed of the Manzanares River to the north of the city of Madrid. The area preserves the headwaters, reservoirs and rugged foothills that supply water to Madrid and conserve local flora and fauna.
Steep ravines, Mediterranean oak and pine woodlands and small reservoirs such as the Santillana Reservoir that lie within the park. The park is a popular nearby destination for hiking, birdwatching and short rural excursions from Madrid.
The protected area sits to the north and northwest of the city of Madrid, covering the Manzanares headwaters and adjacent mountain slopes in the Community of Madrid.

How to Get to Cuenca Alta del Manzanares #
From central Madrid, take the M-607/A-6 northwest toward Colmenar Viejo/El Pardo; several access points exist, including Camino del Pardo and the Soto de Viñuelas area. Public transport: Cercanías trains to Colmenar Viejo and regional buses to nearby towns; then short taxi or local bus connections to trailheads.
