Cube House
Building Iconic tilted cube-shaped residential houses in Rotterdam
In Rotterdam’s Blaak district, the Cube Houses by Piet Blom tilt compact living units atop hexagonal pylons; visitors tour a show‑cube and photograph the unconventional geometry.
The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) in Rotterdam are a distinctive housing complex of tilted, cube-shaped dwellings mounted on hexagonal pylons, designed by architect Piet Blom. The complex is intended to create a pedestrian-scale village and is immediately recognizable for its 45-degree rotated cubes.
Around 38 primary cube units form the main complex; one unit operates as a show home that visitors can enter to see the unusual interior layout. The houses sit above a pedestrian area with shops and connect to the surrounding urban fabric.
They are located in central Rotterdam near the Blaak metro and train station, forming a compact residential and tourist ensemble within the city.
- Number and visitor access: The complex consists of roughly 38 tilted cubic houses designed to appear as a village of treehouses; one interior unit is open to the public as a museum.
What to See #
- Show Cube (visitor home): A single unit set up as a show home that is open to visitors and demonstrates the interior layout of the tilted cubic dwellings.
How to Get to Cube House #
The Cube Houses are in central Rotterdam, a 10-15 minute walk from Rotterdam Centraal station. Tram lines 21 and 24 stop at Blaak, which is immediately adjacent to the cubes. The Overblaak pedestrian tunnel and the Blaak metro/tram interchange make access easy from Rotterdam’s center.
Tips for Visiting Cube House #
- Enter the Kijk-Kubus (Show Cube) from Overblaak to see a furnished cube interior and understand how furniture fits slanted walls.
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to photograph the cubes without the overheated midday crowd and light reflected off adjacent glass towers.
- Those who dislike heights should know that the pedestrian tunnel beneath the cubes gives a good vantage without climbing staircases.
Best Time to Visit Cube House #
Best in spring or autumn to avoid summer crowds and to have clearer light for photographing the tilted geometries.
