Cruit Island
Island Small Donegal island connected by bridge, scenic coast
Linked to Donegal by a causeway, Cruit Island offers sandy bays, surfing and fishing charters alongside scattered cottages and small‑scale local seafood.
Cruit Island is an island off the northwest coast of County Donegal in Ireland. It is part of the coastal Rosses region and lies close to the mainland.
The island has a history of small-scale fishing and crofting typical of Donegal’s coastal islands; settlement has been small and closely tied to nearby mainland communities.
Cruit Island sits off the west coast of County Donegal in Ulster, linked to the mainland by a short causeway or bridge and accessible from nearby coastal towns.
- Bridge connection: Connected to the mainland by a short bridge, providing road access from County Donegal and making day visits and local fisheries accessible.
How to Get to Cruit Island #
Drive from Letterkenny (about 55 km) or from Derry/Londonderry (about 80 km). The island is reached via the R249 and local country roads that cross small causeways; the final approach is narrow and may be single-lane in places. There is limited parking at the island’s small piers and village lanes-expect to park and walk if visiting beaches.
Tips for Visiting Cruit Island #
- Take the small road onto the island in daylight; narrow lanes and local traffic (tractors, sheep) make night driving awkward.
- Bring cash for the tiny pier-side pubs-some still prefer it.
- Walk the south shore at low tide for exposed rock pools and seaweed scents; the west-facing beaches are best for sunsets.
Best Time to Visit Cruit Island #
Best visited between late spring and early autumn for milder weather and easier sea access; winters are rugged and quiet.
