Cristallo is a rugged Dolomite massif in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, located immediately north of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Its highest summit, Monte Cristallo, reaches 3,221 metres and the group is a prominent feature of the Dolomites landscape.
The massif attracts climbers, via ferrata enthusiasts and skiers with steep rock faces, ridges and couloirs. Routes range from challenging alpine climbs to maintained via ferrata paths that provide access across exposed sections.
During the First World War the Cristallo area was part of the Alpine front and retains tunnels, galleries and military remains from that period. These historical features are visible along some mountain routes and add archaeological interest to the mountaineering experience.
Cristallo sits in the Cadore area of the Dolomites, within Veneto, immediately above the resort town of Cortina d’Ampezzo and is accessed via the road and lift systems serving that town.
