Corvin Castle
Castle Gothic-Renaissance castle with towering spires
In Hunedoara, Corvin Castle (Hunyadi Castle) combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, with towers, courtyards and period interiors; tourists tour its halls and learn Transylvanian medieval history.
Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle, is a large Gothic-Renaissance fortress in Hunedoara, Transylvania, Romania, with major construction phases in the 15th century. It is one of the region’s best-known medieval castles and a prominent example of Central European castle architecture.
The complex presents a sequence of defensive and residential spaces including a massive keep, vaulted halls, a drawbridge approach and sculpted stone detail. Interiors open onto a central courtyard and include staircases, chambers and ceremonial rooms restored for public display.
Guided tours and exhibitions illustrate the castle’s medieval construction, later Renaissance alterations and its role in regional history. The site is also used for cultural events and seasonal programming.
Major rebuilding and embellishment took place in the 15th century under the patronage of John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara), producing much of the present plan, with subsequent modifications in later centuries. The castle served as a noble residence and defensive stronghold through the medieval and early modern periods.
The fortress stands in the town of Hunedoara in Hunedoara County, in the historic region of Transylvania, central-western Romania.
- Visitor note: Often called Hunyadi Castle, the current form dates mainly to 15th-century building campaigns and later Renaissance-era additions; the site hosts cultural events and guided tours.
What to See #
- Keep and Inner Courtyard: The main keep and inner courtyard where the principal residential and ceremonial spaces were arranged around a central court during the 15th century reconstruction.
- Defensive Works: Fortified outer walls, gatehouse and barbican that form the defensive perimeter added and modified in medieval and later phases.
