Corno Grande
Mountain Highest peak of Gran Sasso, popular alpine climb
Corno Grande crowns the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo as the Apennines’ highest peak; hikers and mountaineers use trails, cable lifts and alpine huts to reach its limestone summit.
Corno Grande is the highest peak of the Gran Sasso massif and the tallest point in the Apennines, reaching 2,912 metres above sea level. It is a principal summit in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park in Abruzzo, central Italy.
Hikers and mountaineers use established routes from the surrounding plateaus to reach the summit; ascents commonly start from the Campo Imperatore plateau. The summit area offers panoramic views across the central Apennines and down toward the Adriatic coast on clear days, and the nearby Calderone glacier is a notable, though much reduced, ice feature.
The peak is a natural feature of the Apennine chain and has long been a destination for local shepherding, mountaineering and scientific study. In modern times it has been managed within the regional national park since the park’s establishment in 1991.
