Main image

Coricancha, also spelled Qorikancha, was the principal temple of the Inca Empire in the city of Cusco, devoted primarily to the Sun. It was one of the most important religious centres in the Inca capital and formed the ceremonial heart of the city.

The complex originally featured richly finished stone walls and interior surfaces that the Incas covered with gold and precious objects; much of the gold was removed by the Spanish during conquest. The remaining Inca ashlar masonry is notable for its precision and survival beneath later colonial constructions.

After the Spanish conquest a large convent and the Church of Santo Domingo were built directly on top of the temple foundations in the 16th century, creating a complex where Inca and colonial architecture are visible together. The site is located within Cusco’s historic core and is commonly visited as part of the city’s archaeological and museum circuit.

  • High altitude location: Located within central **Cusco**, the site sits at high altitude-around 3,400 metres above sea level-so allow time to acclimatise
  • Stonework: The Inca stone walls are notable for their precision-cut ashlar masonry and are visible behind the later colonial church
