Corfu
Island Ionian island with Venetian architecture and olive groves
Corfu mixes Venetian fortresses, narrow Old Town streets and Ionian beaches; tourists sample local olive oil, Greek and Italian‑influenced cuisine and take boat trips to nearby bays.
Corfu is an Ionian island in the northwest Aegean region of Greece, known for a long indented coastline, fertile interior and a main town with layered historic fortifications. The island covers roughly 592 km2 and has been an important maritime and cultural hub in the Ionian Sea.
Key attractions include the historic port town with Venetian-era bastions and narrow lanes, neoclassical villas and seaside villages with beaches and bays. Visitors use ferries and an international airport to reach the island, and there are numerous coastal viewpoints and archaeological sites.
Corfu’s strategic location led to successive periods of Venetian, French and British control, each leaving architectural and cultural marks. Agricultural production, olive groves and tourism have been important parts of the island economy.
The island lies off the northwest coast of mainland Greece in the Ionian Sea, a short ferry crossing from the mainland port of Igoumenitsa and connected by regular services to other Ionian Islands.

On the island, KTEL regional buses and car hire connect the airport, ferry port and main towns.
Tips for Visiting Corfu #
- Avoid the mid-July-August cruise-ship peak in Corfu Town by visiting in late spring (May-June) or September, or timing a town visit early morning/late afternoon when the forts and Old Town are far less crowded.
- Use local bus services to reach west-coast viewpoints such as Paleokastritsa and quieter northeastern villages like Kassiopi rather than concentrating solely on the Old Town, which gets busiest when cruise ships call.
