Cordillera de Mérida
Mountains Venezuelan Andean range containing highest national peaks
High Venezuelan Andes around Mérida feature the Cordillera de Mérida, home to Pico Bolívar, páramo landscapes, the Mérida cable car and trekking routes that attract mountaineers and nature-focused visitors.
The Cordillera de Mérida is the principal Andean mountain range in western Venezuela and contains the country’s highest summits. It forms the Venezuelan segment of the northern Andes and is a major center for highland ecosystems and alpine landscapes.
The range includes snow-capped peaks, high páramo plateaus, and important glacially carved valleys. It is a destination for trekking, mountaineering, and ecological research, with several peaks rising above 4,000 metres.
Spanish colonial and later Venezuelan activities established settlements and mule routes through the range; over the 20th century the area became important for tourism, conservation and hydroelectric development. Glacial cover has decreased in recent decades.
The Cordillera lies within western Venezuela, running through Mérida and adjacent states, with the city of Mérida located on its eastern foothills and serving as the main gateway to the highlands.
- Access and views: Best panoramic views are from the city of Mérida and nearby highland roads; high-elevation routes require mountaineering experience and can be affected by rapidly changing weather and reduced glaciers.
