Main image

The Cordillera Darwin is a compact mountain range at the western end of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile, noted for extensive glaciers and rugged peaks. It is one of the most heavily glaciated parts of the southern Andes and lies largely within protected parkland.

The range is characterized by steep, glaciated valleys, tidewater glaciers that descend to fjords and channels, and dense temperate rainforest at lower elevations. Boat cruises and expedition vessels that traverse the surrounding channels are the most common way visitors experience the glaciers and coastal peaks.

Exploration and mapping of the range increased in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; it has since been managed for conservation within national park boundaries. Glacial extent and landscape access have changed over time with climatic variations, and many glaciers are monitored for retreat.

Located in the Region of Magallanes, the Cordillera Darwin occupies the western portion of Tierra del Fuego facing the Beagle Channel and adjacent channels. The terrain drops steeply to sea level with a complex coastline of fjords and islands.

  • Access and seasonality: Best approached by boat from channels around Tierra del Fuego; weather is frequently stormy and sea conditions can be rough, limiting access to the austral summer months.

What to See #

  • Alberto de Agostini National Park: Much of the range sits inside Alberto de Agostini National Park, which protects fjords, glaciers, and rugged coastal mountains on the western end of Tierra del Fuego.
  • Glacier systems: Extensive valley and tidewater glaciers that feed into nearby fjords and channels, forming steep ice-clad slopes along the coastline.
