Mountain Rio de Janeiro peak crowned by Christ the Redeemer
Granite peak in Rio de Janeiro topped by the Christ the Redeemer statue, surrounded by Tijuca National Park. Tourists arrive by tram or trail for panoramic city views, rainforest walks and sunset photography.
Corcovado is a granite peak in central Rio de Janeiro that rises to about 710 metres above sea level and overlooks the city and Guanabara Bay. It is most famous as the site of the Christ the Redeemer statue, an internationally recognised symbol of Rio de Janeiro.
The summit provides expansive panoramic views over the city, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana and surrounding beaches, and hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year for the vistas and the statue. The Christ the Redeemer monument itself is 30 metres tall with an additional pedestal and was completed in 1931.
The peak sits within Tijuca National Park and is accessible by the historic Corcovado Rack Railway, by road shuttles, or by hiking trails that climb through forested slopes. Visitor facilities are concentrated at the summit near the statue, with viewing platforms and basic amenities.
- Access and timing: The standard access routes are the Corcovado Rack Railway or the paved road with shuttle services; expect queues during peak hours and early morning or late afternoon for best light and smaller crowds.
What to See #
- Christ the Redeemer statue: The 30-metre statue of Christ the Redeemer sits atop the peak and faces the city, standing on an 8-metre pedestal and visible across Rio de Janeiro.
- Corcovado peak and viewpoints: The Corcovado peak rises to about 710 metres above sea level and contains panoramic viewpoints within Tijuca National Park reached by road, hiking trails or the historic rack railway.
How to Get to Corcovado #
Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer) is reached from central Rio de Janeiro by the Corcovado Rack Railway (Estrada de Ferro do Corcovado) departing from Cosme Velho station - this is the most direct tourist route. Alternatively you can drive or take a guided shuttle up the Estrada das Paineiras to the Paineiras visitor centre and from there use the official shuttle buses to the summit.
From Copacabana/Ipanema the drive is typically under 10 km (20-40 minutes depending on traffic); the Cosme Velho train station is a short walk from the main road in the Cosme Velho neighborhood.
Tips for Visiting Corcovado #
- Arrive at Corcovado before 08:00 to beat the largest crowds and to increase your chances of clear views over Rio - mid-morning and afternoons often fill with tour groups and cloud cover.
- Take the Corcovado Rack Railway from the Cosme Velho station rather than trying to drive up; the train avoids traffic jams on access roads and delivers you to the monument in a predictable schedule.
- If you have time, combine the monument visit with a short walk in Tijuca National Park or a stop at nearby Parque Lage - these give different viewpoints of the statue and fewer crowds than the main platform.
