Connemara National Park
National Park Rugged Connemara park with bogs, mountains, Atlantic views
Connemara National Park presents bogland, heath and the Diamond Hill trail with Atlantic views; hikers and pony enthusiasts visit for mountain walks, Gaeltacht villages, sheep farming landscapes and open moorland.
Connemara National Park is a protected area in County Galway that conserves a representative stretch of the Connemara landscape - mountains, bogs, lakes and coastal fringe. The park is a popular destination for hillwalking, nature observation and experiencing the characteristic western Irish scenery.
Prominent walking routes include paths to Diamond Hill, which has constructed trails and marked viewpoints that overlook bogland, lakes and the sea on clear days, and lower-level trails across blanket bog and heath. The park is used for both short walks and longer hill routes into surrounding ranges.
Established as a national park in 1980, the area is managed for conservation, public access and habitat protection. Park staff maintain trails and provide information, while much of the surrounding landscape remains a mix of private farmland and open mountain country.
The park lies near the village of Letterfrack in western County Galway, within the Connemara region, and is roughly an hour’s drive from Galway city depending on route and traffic.
- Trails and Diamond Hill: the park has a network of marked walking trails of varying difficulty; the Diamond Hill loop is the park's most visited route with constructed paths and viewpoints.
- Visitor practicalities: the nearest village with visitor facilities is Letterfrack; services in the park are limited so come prepared with food and waterproofs.
What to See #
- Diamond Hill: Diamond Hill - a marked trail and summit that provides panoramic views across the park and surrounding Connemara landscape.
- Bogs and shorelands: lowland bogs, heath and lakes that form part of the park's mosaic of habitats and support typical Connemara flora and birdlife.
