Conímbriga
Ruins Extensive Roman ruins near Coimbra with intricate mosaics
Southwest of Coimbra, Conímbriga preserves extensive Roman ruins-houses, large mosaics, a forum and an on-site museum. Visitors come for archaeology, Roman mosaics and provincial urban planning evidence.
Conímbriga is a large Roman archaeological site in central Portugal near the town of Condeixa-a-Nova, known for extensive urban remains and well-preserved mosaics. It is one of the largest Roman settlements excavated in Portugal and a principal site for Roman provincial archaeology in the region.
The excavated remains include streets, a forum area, a substantial public baths complex and multiple houses with surviving mosaic floors; an on-site museum displays ceramics, sculptures and inscriptions recovered during excavations. The visible city walls and layout give a clear impression of Roman urban planning on a regional scale.
Conímbriga was founded in the Roman period and inhabited from the late Republican or early Imperial era through late antiquity; the site shows phases of urban development under Roman rule and later decline in the post-Roman period. Systematic excavations began in the 19th century and continued through the 20th century, producing the core of the present open-air remains and museum collections.
The ruins lie inland in central Portugal, close to the town of Condeixa-a-Nova and within the Coimbra district. The site sits in agricultural countryside that has preserved the larger Roman footprint.
