Como Cathedral

Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como) is the Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Como, Lombardy, and is one of the most important late-Gothic churches in northern Italy. Construction began in 1396 and the building was completed in phases over several centuries.

The cathedral’s façade and overall plan combine Gothic and Renaissance features; the exterior faces the city’s main cathedral square. Inside, the nave and a series of chapels contain artworks and frescoes dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, and a raised choir sits behind the high altar.

A small museum and treasury attached to the cathedral preserve liturgical objects and documents related to its history. The Duomo occupies a central location in Como, a short walk from the lakeshore and the main urban centre.

Built on the site of earlier churches, the current cathedral grew incrementally from the late 14th century through the early modern period as funding and artistic programmes developed.
