Comino
Island Tiny Maltese island famed for the Blue Lagoon
Between Malta and Gozo, Comino’s Blue Lagoon is popular for clear-water swimming, snorkeling and day trips from Valletta; the island has few permanent residents and simple walking paths.
Comino is a small island between Malta and Gozo known for its sheltered bays and crystal-clear waters. It is sparsely inhabited and primarily visited for its coastal scenery rather than built attractions.
The most famous spot is the Blue Lagoon, a shallow sheltered bay with vivid turquoise water used for swimming and snorkeling; day boats from Malta and Gozo bring most visitors. There are also simple walking tracks, secluded coves, and the small historic Santa Marija Tower on the island.
Comino has a long history of seasonal use and intermittent habitation, with defensive towers constructed during the Knights of St John period to guard local waterways. It has never developed into a permanent urban settlement and remains largely undeveloped.
Lying in the channel between Malta and Gozo, the island is a short boat crossing from either main island and functions mainly as a day-trip destination.
- Blue Lagoon access: The island is largely car-free and attracts day-trippers for its clear shallow waters, especially the Blue Lagoon between Comino and Cominotto.
What to See #
- Blue Lagoon: The Blue Lagoon in a sheltered bay of luminous shallow water, widely visited for swimming, snorkeling and boat trips during the warmer months.
- Santa Marija Tower: A 17th-century coastal watchtower built by the Knights of St John that stands on the island and historically served as a lookout and defensive point.
How to Get to Comino #
Day boats and water taxis operate from Ċirkewwa (north Malta), Cospicua, and Marfa. Crossing times vary from 20-45 minutes depending on departure point; many operators run frequent services in summer.
Tips for Visiting Comino #
- Arrive at the Blue Lagoon early (before 10:00) to secure a spot on the sand and avoid day-boat crowds.
- If seeking quiet, walk the perimeter paths away from the lagoon - the north coast is dramatically different and often empty.
- Bring reef shoes - the seabed around the Blue Lagoon is rocky and can be sharp.
Best Time to Visit Comino #
Best in late spring or early autumn for warm water and smaller crowds; midsummer brings heavy day-boat traffic.
