Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium

Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium was the Roman colony established at the site of modern Cologne in the mid-first century CE. It became the principal Roman city in the lower Rhine region and the administrative center of the province of Germania Inferior.

Visible remains and museum collections document the Roman city’s public buildings, baths and domestic life; highlights include mosaics, statues and inscriptions recovered from excavations. Several Roman features are accessible in the modern city center around Cologne Cathedral and the Old Town, where archaeological displays and preserved foundations interpret the Roman urban layout.

The settlement received colonia status under Emperor Claudius in about AD 50 and the name references the imperial family and the local Ara (altar). Over subsequent centuries the city developed as a Roman military, administrative and commercial hub and later continued as an important medieval and modern urban center under changing rulers.

The Roman colonia occupied the riverside site of present-day Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the Rhine River. Many of the Roman remains lie beneath or adjacent to the central city area around Cologne Cathedral.
