Zoo Historic zoo in Cologne with diverse species
One of Germany’s older zoos, Cologne Zoological Garden features an aquarium, historical animal houses and varied species; families visit for daily feedings, exhibits and riverfront walks.
Cologne Zoological Garden (Kölner Zoo) is a major zoological park in Cologne, Germany, founded in 1860. It is one of the older and larger German zoos and combines outdoor enclosures with indoor display buildings.
Guests encounter a broad range of animals across hundreds of species and thousands of individual animals, with both indoor and outdoor exhibits and an on-site aquarium. The adjacent Flora botanical garden is commonly visited together with the zoo.
Opened in 1860, the park expanded through the 19th and 20th centuries with additions such as the aquarium and modernized enclosures; the zoo was rebuilt and updated following wartime damage.
The zoo is located in the Riehl district north of Cologne’s city centre, adjacent to the Rhine and the Flora, a short distance from downtown Cologne and accessible by public transport.
- Flora nearby: The zoo sits beside the historic Flora botanical garden, allowing a combined visit that pairs animal exhibits with formal plantings and seasonal displays.
- Aquarium: There is a dedicated aquarium facility within the park with exhibits for fish, reptiles and amphibians, providing indoor viewing year-round.
What to See #
- Aquarium: A separate aquarium building with freshwater and marine tanks plus reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates; scheduled feedings and indoor exhibits make it useful in poor weather.
- Flora and Botanical Garden: Historic botanical garden located directly adjacent to the zoo with formal plant collections, seasonal displays and walking paths that connect with zoo grounds.
