Colline Metallifere

The Colline Metallifere, or Metalliferous Hills, are a hilly, mineral-rich area in southern and western Tuscany known for historical metal mining. The landscape is marked by disused mines, mining towns and a patchwork of woods and agricultural land.

The region’s heritage includes Etruscan and medieval mining operations, later industrial-era mines and surviving miners’ settlements. Today several local parks and museums document the mining history and provide hiking trails and interpretive routes.

Mining activity shaped the economy and settlement pattern from antiquity through the modern period; extraction declined in the 20th century and many sites are now preserved for heritage and environmental uses.

The Colline Metallifere extend across parts of southern Tuscany and include municipalities and former mining districts in the provinces that border the coastal and inland zones.
