A historic convict-era coal-mining site on the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania that preserves ruins and landscape features from a 19th-century penal settlement. It is recognised for its archaeological and historical value and is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.
Scattered ruins of convict-built structures, visible mine workings and a convict cemetery, set in coastal bushland. Interpretation at the site explains the coal-mining operations and the daily life of the convict workforce during the settlement period.
Established as a convict coal-mining station in the 1830s, the site was operated by the colonial authorities to supply coal during the period 1833 to 1848. Convicts provided the labour for mining and associated infrastructure; after closure the site fell into ruin and later became protected for its heritage values.
Situated on the eastern side of the Tasman Peninsula in southern Tasmania near the locality of Saltwater River, the site is managed as a historic reserve and is accessible from local roads serving the peninsula.
