Clonmacnoise is an early medieval monastic site on the east bank of the River Shannon in County Offaly, Ireland, founded in the 6th century by St Ciarán. It developed into a major ecclesiastical and scholarly centre during the early medieval period.
Established around the mid-6th century, Clonmacnoise expanded through the early Middle Ages and remained an important religious, cultural and burial site into the medieval period. The surviving stone work and sculpted crosses reflect centuries of ecclesiastical activity and refurbishment.
The monastic complex stands on the east bank of the River Shannon near the village of Shannonbridge in County Offaly and is accessible from regional roads.
