Cloaca Maxima
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman sewer system still visible in Rome
The Cloaca Maxima is a surviving section of ancient Rome’s early sewer system near the Forum. Archaeology and engineering enthusiasts include it on walks through Rome’s Republican and Imperial ruins.
The Cloaca Maxima is an ancient Roman drainage system originally constructed to channel water and sewage away from the city of Rome. It is one of the earliest large-scale engineered sewers in the ancient world.
Initial construction dates to the early Roman monarchy and republican periods, with major works attributed to the 6th and 5th centuries BCE when the city developed formal drainage. Over subsequent centuries the channel was enlarged, vaulted and maintained as Rome’s urban drainage system.
Traces of the sewer run through the low-lying areas of the Roman Forum and discharge toward the Tiber; surviving visible sections are concentrated near the Forum and the river embankment in central Rome.
What to See #
- Forum section: Exposed fragments and vaulted channels near the Roman Forum where sections of the ancient sewer can be seen among other Roman ruins.
- Tiber outlet: Surviving stretches that carried urban runoff to the Tiber; the sewer's outlet into the river can still be traced near the river embankments.
How to Get to Cloaca Maxima #
The Cloaca Maxima survives in the Roman Forum area of central Rome. The Forum and adjacent sites are a short walk from the Colosseo Metro station (Line B) - typically a 5-10 minute walk - and from Piazza Venezia (about 5-10 minutes on foot). If arriving by car, follow signs for the historic centre / Fori Imperiali; much of the area is pedestrianised so park outside and walk into the forum area.
Tips for Visiting Cloaca Maxima #
- See the Cloaca Maxima from the Roman Forum/Forum Boarium area early in the morning when the archaeological zones are quieter - the exposed masonry stretches are easiest to appreciate with fewer people in the way.
- Start your visit at the Forum ticket entrance so you can follow the signage and guide panels that point out the surviving sections of the sewer and explain its course toward the Tiber; standalone plaques in the Forum identify visible sections.
- Combine the Cloaca Maxima viewpoint with a walk to the nearby Forum Boarium (Temple of Hercules Victor/Temple of Portunus) to trace where the drain meets the river - that continuity is often missed by visitors who only glance at the Forum's monuments.
Best Time to Visit Cloaca Maxima #
Visit the Cloaca Maxima in spring or early autumn for pleasant weather and good conditions for walking the archaeological areas while avoiding the height of summer heat and crowds.
