Cividade de Terroso is an Iron Age hillfort settlement - a Castro - located close to the present-day coast near Póvoa de Varzim in Portugal’s Porto District. It is a well-preserved example of the northwest Iberian Castro culture, with stone ramparts, house foundations and terraces on a defensive hilltop.
Visitors can walk among the exposed stone footings of circular and rectangular dwellings, trace the line of the defensive walls and inspect surviving streets and terraces that structured the settlement. The hilltop position offers direct views over the surrounding plain toward the Atlantic coast and helps explain the site’s strategic location.
The site was established in the pre-Roman Iron Age and continued into the later pre-Roman and early Roman periods, undergoing changes in domestic layout and external contacts as regional societies evolved. Archaeological work has documented long-term occupation and fortification phases.
Cividade de Terroso occupies a low coastal hill just inland from the northern Portuguese Atlantic shore, immediately south of the town of Póvoa de Varzim and within easy reach of local road links and coastal settlements.
- Visible house foundations: The site preserves visible stone house foundations and rampart lines, making it one of the most complete examples of a Portuguese Castro settlement for open-air visits.
- Good viewpoint: Clear coastal and plain views from the hilltop make the site useful for understanding the community's strategic placement near the Atlantic coast.

- Acropolis and main defensive walls: A fortified acropolis area on the hilltop where the principal defensive walls and denser cluster of dwellings are concentrated.
- Domestic terraces and house foundations: Outer living terraces and street alignments that preserve foundations of circular and rectangular domestic structures typical of the Castro culture.
