Ciudad Mitad del Mundo

Ciudad Mitad del Mundo is a monument and museum complex near Quito, Ecuador, established to commemorate the 18th-century French Geodesic Mission and the line of the equator. The site features a large monument marking the approximate equatorial line and a series of exhibition buildings that interpret geography and cultural history.

The complex contains a raised monument, open exhibition spaces and outdoor displays where visitors can take photos on the marked equator line and see demonstrations of equatorial effects. An adjacent private museum, the Intiñan Museum, presents interactive exhibits and asserts the precisely GPS-measured equator position a short distance from the main monument.

The monument and associated attractions were developed in the 20th century as a tourist and educational site celebrating the geodetic work that established measurements of the equator. The complex has grown to include restaurants, craft stalls, and small museums aimed at general visitors.

Ciudad Mitad del Mundo sits north of Quito in Pichincha Province, on the outskirts of the capital city; it is easily reached by road from Quito and functions as a common half-day excursion for visitors based in the capital.
