City of Cuzco
Historical Site Inca imperial capital with archaeological remains and plazas
Cuzco’s Plaza de Armas sits amid Inca stone foundations topped by colonial churches; travelers use the city as a base for Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Andean markets.
The City of Cuzco is the pre-Columbian capital of the Inca Empire and a UNESCO historic urban site in the Peruvian Andes, combining Inca foundations with a Spanish colonial cityscape. It was the administrative and ceremonial heart of the Inca state and later became an important colonial capital after the 1530s.
Major features include the Inca ritual and administrative complex of Qorikancha, the hilltop fortress of Sacsayhuamán with its massive polygonal walls, and a colonial centre dominated by the Cathedral and the Plaza de Armas. The city’s layout and fabric show continuity and adaptation from Inca urban planning to Spanish colonial institutions.
Cusco was the political centre of the Inca from the late pre-Hispanic period until the Spanish conquest in the 1530s, after which major churches and administrative buildings were erected on Inca foundations. Archaeological remains and built fabric illustrate successive phases of urban development, adaptation and reuse through the colonial and republican periods.
The city sits in the Peruvian Andes at about 3,400 metres above sea level in the Department of Cusco, surrounded by highland valleys and ridges; it is the principal gateway for travel to surrounding Inca sites.
- Altitude note: Cusco sits at high altitude-approximately 3,400 metres above sea level-so visitors should allow time to acclimatize before exertion at archaeological sites.
- Urban layout: The historic urban core combines Inca stonework foundations with Spanish colonial churches and plazas; many important sites are within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas.
What to See #
- Qorikancha: Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun) - the principal Inca temple in Cusco whose finely cut stone foundations survive beneath a colonial convent and church.
- Sacsayhuamán: Sacsayhuamán - a monumental Inca fortress on a ridge above the city, notable for massive dry-stone walls of precisely jointed boulders.
- Cathedral and Plaza de Armas: Cusco Cathedral and Plaza de Armas - the colonial-era cathedral and the main central square, built over and alongside Inca foundations during the 16th and 17th centuries.
How to Get to City of Cuzco #
Cusco is served by Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) with frequent flights from Lima (about 1 hour 15 minutes). The airport sits just outside the city-it’s roughly 3 km from the Plaza de Armas and about a 10-15 minute taxi ride into the historic centre. Long‑distance buses from other Peruvian cities also arrive at the city bus terminal; from there the central square is a short taxi or city bus ride away.
