City Gate
Monument Principal ceremonial entrance to Valletta's fortified city
Valletta’s City Gate functions as the principal entrance to Malta’s fortified capital, adjacent to Parliament and an open-air theatre. Tourists pass through en route to St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the harbourside.
City Gate is the principal entrance to the fortified city of Valletta, Malta, marking the transition from the modern piazza and transport hub into the historic walled city. The current gate and adjacent public realm were redeveloped in a project led by architect Renzo Piano and completed in 2014.
The gate forms the main pedestrian and vehicular access to Republic Street and the central spine of Valletta, and it sits beside the large Triton Fountain and the new Parliament building. Visitors commonly start walking tours of the city from this plaza and use the open forecourt as a meeting and orientation point.
Valletta’s city gate has been rebuilt several times across its history, with earlier fortification gateways on the same site dating back to the city’s foundation in the 16th century. The most recent scheme aimed to modernize access while creating a clear public arrival space.
The gate sits on the southern edge of Valletta, facing the Grand Harbour and adjacent to the main bus terminus and approach routes that connect the city to surrounding towns and ferry points.
- Best viewpoint: The plaza in front of the gate, including the Triton Fountain, provides the most common frontal viewpoint for photographs.
