Cithaeron

Cithaeron is a mountain range on the border of Attica and Boeotia in central Greece, with a highest point reaching over 1,300 metres. The ridge and its passes appear frequently in ancient Greek mythology and literature.

Hikers and visitors encounter rocky ridgelines, steep slopes and scattered ancient traces such as hilltop fortifications and pastoral landscapes. The area is noted more for its mythic and strategic associations than for large modern settlements.

In antiquity the mountain served as a geographic boundary and featured in stories about figures such as Pentheus and other Bacchic myths, and it later hosted fortified sites controlling passes between the regions.

Cithaeron lies north of Athens in mainland Greece, forming a natural divide between the Attica peninsula and inland Boeotia.
