Cișmigiu Gardens

Cișmigiu Gardens is a 19th-century public park in central Bucharest and is the city’s oldest public garden. It occupies a compact, heavily planted block in the historic core and functions as a formal urban green space.

The layout centers on an ornamental lake with walkways and shaded alleys, a network of paths, flower beds and several small monuments. Key features include the central boating lake, roses and mature trees that create distinct seasonal displays; there are also playgrounds and a bandstand used for occasional events.

The gardens were laid out in the mid-19th century and have been modified and replanted several times since to suit changing public needs. Over time the site has shifted from private promenades to an organised municipal park open to the public.

The park sits in central Bucharest near the historic and administrative centre, within walking distance of University Square and the old town. Entrances are distributed around the block so the gardens are accessible from multiple city streets.

• When to go: Best visited in spring for the rose beds and in late afternoon for softer light under the trees.
• Boat rentals: Central lake offers seasonal rowboat rentals and is the park's focal point for photos.
