Circus of Maxentius
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman circus on the Appian Way, ruins
Along Rome’s Appian Way, the Circus of Maxentius preserves a long arc of corridored seating and a chariot track built in the early 4th century. Visitors explore the ruins, adjoining imperial villa remains and quieter countryside outside the city.
The Circus of Maxentius is an ancient Roman circus on the Via Appia Antica just outside Rome, built as part of Emperor Maxentius’s imperial complex in the early 4th century AD. It is one of the best-preserved Roman circuses on the Appian Way.
The site preserves a long stretch of the racetrack - roughly 500 metres in length - with visible sections of the central spine and raceway. The northwest end retains the foundations of the starting gates, and the outline of the seating and service areas remains legible in the archaeology.
The circus sits alongside a circular funerary building and other elements of Maxentius’s villa complex, so visits are commonly combined with a walk along the Appian Way and nearby Roman monuments. Interpretation panels and excavation exposures show construction techniques and layout.
Commissioned by Emperor Maxentius in the early 4th century AD, the circus formed part of a larger imperial estate used for public spectacles and imperial display. After Maxentius’s defeat by Constantine the complex fell out of imperial use and later survived as an archaeological ruin until modern excavation and conservation in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The circus stands on the Via Appia Antica within the Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica, roughly southeast of Rome’s historic centre, and is commonly visited from the Appian Way trail and nearby archaeological sites.
- Visitor tips: The site lies within the Appia Antica archaeological park and is largely open-air, so wear sun and weather protection and expect uneven ground.
- Best viewpoint: The northwest end offers the clearest view of the surviving starting gates and the track's curvature, recommended for photography.
What to See #
- Racetrack: The oval racing track where chariot races and other spectacles were staged; its length is roughly 500 metres and portions of the central spine and the track surface remain visible.
- Starting gates (carceres): A row of starting boxes at the northwest end where the carceres once stood; the stone foundations of the starting area are among the better-preserved features.
- Nearby mausoleum (part of the Maxentius complex): A circular funerary building set close to the circus, part of the larger imperial complex commissioned by Maxentius and dating to the early 4th century AD.
How to Get to Circus of Maxentius #
The site is located along the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) southeast of Rome’s ancient core. From the Appian Way regional park, reach the Circus on foot or by bicycle along the park paths; it’s also accessible by taxi from the nearby San Giovanni or Circo Massimo areas.
Tips for Visiting Circus of Maxentius #
- Visit at sunrise if possible - the long shadows dramatize the semicircular chariot track.
- Pair a visit with the nearby Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) and the Baths of Caracalla for a broader sense of imperial Rome.
- Bring good footwear: the ancient paving and grassy slopes are uneven and can be slippery after rain.
