Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica
Historical Site Timber-framed Protestant churches built under 17th-century peace treaties
Two 17th-century timber-framed Protestant ‘Churches of Peace’ showcase large wooden interiors built after the Thirty Years’ War; visitors study their iconography, carpentry and historical context.
The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica are two 17th-century timber-framed Protestant churches in southwestern Poland, established under terms following the Peace of Westphalia. They are among the largest timber-framed religious structures in Europe and were completed in the mid-1600s.
Interiors are notable for multi-tiered wooden galleries that create very large covered seating areas, elaborate painted and gilded decoration, and monumental organs and altarpieces; both buildings accommodate large congregations under a single roof. The two churches together demonstrate a distinctive response to legal and material limits imposed on Protestant worship in Silesia at the time.
Built between the 1650s and later decades by local Protestant communities, the churches were constructed using traditional timber techniques and then decorated by regional craftsmen. They have been maintained and restored periodically and remain important examples of post-Westphalian church architecture in Central Europe.
Both churches stand in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland, in the towns of Jawor and Świdnica, west of Wrocław. Each is located within its town centre and accessible by regional roads and public transport.
- Construction context: Erected after the Peace of Westphalia, they were built of timber under strict conditions that shaped their exterior appearance while allowing spacious, ornate interiors.

Tips for Visiting Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica #
- Visit early in the morning at opening time (Świdnica first if you have to choose) to see the interior wooden galleries and polychrome decorations before tour groups arrive; check each church's website for guided‑tour times.
- Plan to visit both churches in one day by car or regional bus-Jawor is typically quieter in the afternoon, while Świdnica gets the larger crowds-so reverse the order if you prefer fewer people inside.
- When inside, linger on the raised wooden galleries and painted ceiling areas (many visitors only photograph the exteriors); audible organ recitals and occasional concerts give a different sense of the scale, so check the events calendar.
