Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica

The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica are two 17th-century timber-framed Protestant churches in southwestern Poland, established under terms following the Peace of Westphalia. They are among the largest timber-framed religious structures in Europe and were completed in the mid-1600s.

Interiors are notable for multi-tiered wooden galleries that create very large covered seating areas, elaborate painted and gilded decoration, and monumental organs and altarpieces; both buildings accommodate large congregations under a single roof. The two churches together demonstrate a distinctive response to legal and material limits imposed on Protestant worship in Silesia at the time.

Built between the 1650s and later decades by local Protestant communities, the churches were constructed using traditional timber techniques and then decorated by regional craftsmen. They have been maintained and restored periodically and remain important examples of post-Westphalian church architecture in Central Europe.

Both churches stand in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland, in the towns of Jawor and Świdnica, west of Wrocław. Each is located within its town centre and accessible by regional roads and public transport.
