Churches of Chiloé
Historical Site Distinct wooden churches blending Catholic and local traditions
The wooden churches of Chiloé combine local carpentry with Catholic liturgy across island parishes; travelers visit for vernacular timber construction, shingled exteriors and the archipelago’s fishing communities.
The Churches of Chiloé are a group of wooden ecclesiastical buildings on Chiloé Island in southern Chile, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unique timber architecture and the islanders’ carpentry tradition. The ensemble consists of sixteen churches built between the 17th and early 20th centuries that blend European Jesuit and local indigenous building practices.
Visitors find distinctive exterior shingle cladding, timber frames and interiors featuring native woods and decorative carving; the churches range from modest village chapels to larger parish churches and many remain active for worship. The sites are appreciated for their construction using local materials adapted to the archipelago’s climate and resources.
The churches were constructed by Jesuit missionaries and later Franciscan missions working with local craftsmen, producing a regional school of timber church-building that persisted across centuries. The buildings have been maintained and restored at different times to preserve the timber fabric and decorative elements.
The churches are spread across the Chiloé Archipelago in the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile, with several major examples near towns such as Castro, Achao and Chonchi; many are reached by local roads and short boat connections between islands.
- Construction and number: The property comprises sixteen churches built largely of native timber using traditional carpentry techniques developed by Jesuit and Franciscan missions.
- Visiting practicalities: Many of the churches remain active parish churches and combine religious function with cultural tourism; several are reachable by short ferries or road trips from Casto and other towns on Chiloé.
What to See #
- Representative churches: The churches included in the World Heritage property are distributed across Chiloé Island and nearby islets and include notable examples at Achao, Dalcahue, Chonchi and Castro.

The churches are generally in village centres or a short walk from roadside parking; regional buses and private transfers also connect the main towns on the island.
Tips for Visiting Churches of Chiloé #
- Plan your route and transport carefully - the churches are spread across islands and small towns, so check ferry and road connections and start early to fit several sites into a day.
- Contact local tourism offices or parish priests in advance when possible: many Chilote churches are opened by the community caretakers on request, so arranging a key or guide avoids finding doors locked.
- Visit some churches in late afternoon for the best light on wooden interiors and exteriors, and include nearby cemeteries and plazas in your itinerary - these adjoining spaces are often integral to the churches' cultural context but are overlooked by quick stopovers.
