Main image

The Church of the Gesù in Rome is the mother church of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and one of the principal Baroque churches in the city. Construction began in the mid-16th century and the church was completed and consecrated in 1584.

The interior is organised as a broad single nave with lateral chapels and rich Baroque decoration; its most famous work is the dome and nave ceiling fresco “The Triumph of the Name of Jesus” by Giovanni Battista Gaulli. The main altar contains the tomb and relics of St. Ignatius of Loyola, attracting both worshippers and visitors.

The church was designed to serve as the order’s principal house of worship and to demonstrate Counter-Reformation ideals in its architecture and decoration. Architects associated with its design include Giacomo Vignola, who provided the plan, and Giacomo della Porta, who worked on the façade and completion.
