Église Saint-Trophime is a Romanesque church in the historic centre of Arles, built mainly in the 12th century. It is renowned for its sculpted portal and monastic cloister and forms part of Arles’s Romanesque architectural ensemble.
The western portal features a large Romanesque tympanum and richly carved archivolts and capitals displaying biblical scenes and figures, dating from the mid-12th century. Adjacent to the church is the cloister, whose columned galleries and carved capitals date from the 12th to the 15th centuries and are frequently cited as one of the site’s highlights.
Construction concentrated in the 12th century, with successive additions and modifications through the later Middle Ages that introduced Gothic elements to the choir and vaulting. The church and cloister have been preserved and restored over time and were included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Arles’s Roman and Romanesque monuments.
