Church of Colònia Güell

The Church of Colònia Güell is the Gaudí-designed crypt and associated buildings in the former textile workers’ colony of Colònia Güell, near Barcelona. The crypt was commissioned by industrialist Eusebi Güell and designed by Antoni Gaudí in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The crypt is notable for its experimental structural solutions such as catenary arches and inclined columns, and served as a testing ground for ideas later used in the Sagrada Família. Visitors focus on the crypt’s unique architecture and the layout of the neighbouring workers’ village.

Construction began in the late 19th century under Gaudí’s direction but the project remained unfinished; the crypt and several colony buildings were completed and have been preserved. The site demonstrates the relationship between industrial patronage and modernist architecture.

The complex is located in Santa Coloma de Cervelló approximately 20 kilometres southwest of central Barcelona and is accessible by road and public transport; guided visits are the normal way to see the crypt and colony buildings.
